Live Christmas Trees

Pictured here is what I think is a Silver Fir planted near a Friends Meeting House in Maryland. It seems like an unlikely tree for our area and yet it is healthy and dense and thick, not at all sickly.
I stopped by and asked one day and was told it was a Christmas tree which was later planted. The odd thing is several years later someone came along and cut the top out of it to make another Christmas tree. I guess that's why it is multi-stemmed.
Do you buy B&B trees for Christmas and later plant them out? How do you keep them from dehydrating while in your home? How do you plant them if the ground is frozen? What species do you use?
