Suspected fungus on White Oak

Hello all, I have noticed an area on a mature White Oak in my yard where the bark is receding and what I assume is a fungus is growing on the wound. The brownish-gray substance acts like a powder when I blow on it, leading me to believe these are spores. Does anyone know what this is or know of a source I can research?

The wound is getting bigger over time; we have a lot of squirrels in our yard, but I can't tell if they are chewing the bark or if the fungus is causing the bark to recede.
