| I am so sorry that the "t" in white didn't show up. They let you edit the post, but not the title of the post. Obviously, it was meant to say "white". The weatherman told us last night, that there's only a "slim" chance of a white Christmas. He said there just isn't that bitter cold air in the forecast. Looking out in our backyard a few minutes ago, I saw the neighbor's rat terrier shaking a vole violently back and forth in his mouth. I suppose the voles are missing the snow cover about as much as the ski operators are; both their livelihoods depend on it in the winter. If this keeps up Buffalo's going to lose its reputation for blizzards. |

Follow-Up Postings:
| I sure hope not, I hate snow. The chances for Nashville are something like 5%. I live 65 miles southeast and about 500' higher so my chances are a little better. I spent the first 38 years of my life in southern CT and a white Christmas was a rarity. The first Christmas here in'85 was white. Go figure. |
| No snow. First another 'nor'icane' with wind and big rain, then maybe some cold, then sunny and milder. |
| We got 3" this past Sunday but most has melted and will surely all melt with an 80% change of rain on Sat...no complaints though. I LOVE the snow, although not a big fan of driving in it of course. A nice fluffy snow laying on the naked branches of deciidious trees is something I look forward to as much as spring blooms. |
| I doubt it. We were supposed to get snow about a week ago. We got rain instead. This coming weekend is supposed to be in the fifty's. I am glad it isn't snowing anyway. This winter so far has been mild, but it has only just begun. I am hoping to finish a couple unfinished fall chores. |
| The snow sure is pretty. I think that one of the prettiest times of the year is when you have a good snow cover and it gets cold enough so that the snow crystals sparkle. I like it to when you walk on the snow and it squeaks I think it also improves things considerably when it stays cold enough so that every couple of days it snows enough to keep the ground white. It is sure better than North Carolina where we live now and it gets down in the low thirties and is humid, cold and grey. Completely depressing. |
| I have got snow since the end of november, and much colder than normal for this time of year. It will be rain this weekend though, but I guess it will turn colder again before christmas. About 50% chance for a white christmas in these parts, but I think this year will be a snowy one. |
| Well, in northern Alabama, it's almost certainly a no. We did get a few inches on Christmas morning back in 2009 or 10, but I think that was the first time in decades. The long range forecast shows 59 for Christmas day! :( |
| Speaking of no snow we where 1 day short of breaking the record for most consecutive days without snow (over 100 years of record keeping). It was just a couple months shy of an entire year. Please note where I'm located, lol. It is sure better than North Carolina where we live now and it gets down in the low thirties and is humid, cold and grey. Completely depressing. Yep, thats one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of late Nov and early Dec. It looks very blah if its not green or white out. |
| Coincidentally, my son and I were talking about this today. He is 19 years old and claims that he can only remember ONE Christmas that was not white. That seems warped to me, I say it's more like 50/50 chance where we live on the border of zone 5/6 in New England. So far we have no snow cover and moderate temps. It is not shaping up to be a harsh season, but who knows. December is often cold and harsh, but January and/or Feb. could have heavy snowfall too. Snow is beautiful but hopefully it won't last long. Some years we have persistent snow cover from early December to March or April. 2 years ago the cover reached almost 3 feet and the rodents had a field day on my perennials! Ugh. |

| The International Society of Arboriculture is highlighting this same report in its materials and Facebook page, etc. just fyi. |
| I could have one here in Elko if I was staying. But I'm heading back to Jersey. Where, although there is the slight chance of a storm developing around Christmas, odds favor no snow by a fairly large margin. |

| im in ooltewah looked on weather on weather.com, forecast calls for rain/snow showers, night is 36 and rain but possibly snow since it usually snows if its around the 30 degree mark |

| oops I posted my post above on wrong thread - sorry. ILMT it was supposed to to on your thread about the oldest largest trees dying faster. |
| The snow level is creeping lower and lower here. I took this picture a few days ago from the bluff in the lower part of the garden. Mike |

| It's in the 50's today here, and it will be tomorrow as well. The rest of the week is supposed to be in the mid 40's. This is certainly NOT the Buffalo kind of winter weather I have always had in the last 20 years here. The last 2-3 years have been more like Spring all through the winter. It looks like it will be the same this winter too. I don't know how the trees here ever went dormant here; let alone staying dormant with our bright sunshine and 50's for most of Oct, Nov and Dec. I guess the amount of hours of actual daylight shortening plays a MUCH larger part in dormancy than air temperatures, because these temps are the temps of Spring where so much growth goes on. |
| Well, remember, deciduous trees go dormant across much of the south with much milder temperatures than in the north. If I recall correctly, after dormancy sets in, many trees have a set number of "chill" hours required before they will start to come out of dormancy, in order to prevent accidents like coming out of dormancy in a December warm spell. |
| One of my Compton oaks hasn't hardened off it's last spurt of new growth. It's strange, it is supple like it just sprouted, the leaves are green. It has gone into the 20's enough times to have put the tree dormant, in spite of the mostly 30's and 40's lately. It lost alot of the lower leaves. This is my lower yard Comptons oak. My upper yard Comptons is still green. As far as a white Christmas I doubt it, but maybe it'll be a surprise. |
| An 1" of snow if going to fall by late afternoon then a storm rolls in on Thursday. 100% chance of of snow...so yes, it is on! |

| Now talking as much as 18 inches. |
| I think it's all hype I bet you only get 6 inches and my area will only get 4 inches! although I prefer 12 inches then I get a snow day! |
| Well guys I can vouch for the storm system having moisture to work with. Temps are in the 60's and dewpoint up close to 60. Tornado watch too. While I wouldn't complain about snow, would be more than happy with rain. -20 inches for the year for mu location. Good luck guys getting what you need. Arktrees |

| Wonderful photo, Mike. I've got to get back out to that region again some day. Yeah whaas.....I feel ya.....these things have been known to fizzle. So far though, the forecasters are hanging with the bigger totals. And with all that juice Ark mentions, supposed to be wet and heavy. +oM |
| I live in Minnesota! OF COURSE it will be a white Christmas! It's ALWAYS a friggin white christmas (grumble bah humbug) We are still taking bets on 'White Easter' though. |
| Its going to be a soggy flooded christmas here :-( Resin |
| got about 8 inches so that probably puts you at 12 inches so far? |

| They're calling for 8-12 inches here, to occur this weekend. While it won't be snowing here on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, it will still be a white Christmas for us. |
| Damn, that storm picked up some steam! The offical snow total by the end of the evening will be 15". Snow was a backbuster to boot, very heavy. I'm loving it though plants will be under snow cover for awhile and the moisture is a big bonus. Most snow I've seen from one storm since...I don't even know! Trees are actually holding up pretty well even though they are coated in sleet and snow with winds gusting to 40mph. |

| You guys ended up beating us out whaas. I'd say no more than half a foot here, though it snows still. What we did get was all water, that's for sure. And I heard one rumble of thunder early this morning. Always like when that happens-thunder snow. +oM |
| For some reason I keep thinking you're in Fond du lac. The heavy snow band was pretty tight and accurate. |
| Glad to see you got the snow you were wanting. I got a few spitting flurries and LOTS of wind, but that was it for the winter stuff. However, I did pick up 0.6" of very welcome rain. The encouraging thing to me about this storm is not so much it's intensity, but the fact that there hasn't been a fairly strong well organized system like this one in the middle of the country for quit some time. Hence the drought. I'm hoping it's a change that will take hold and expand. Don't wish misery on anyone, but there are benefits too. As for A White Christmas....... MAYBE!!! Models still all over the place, as they usually are in this part of the world with winter type precipitation. Can't count on anything here until it's on the ground. However, it doesn't look like a short sleeve Christmas like we have some years. Arktrees |

| I'd say we ended up with eight inches all told. Had to shovel again this morning and of course, there was water under the snow. Each and every shovel full was stuck to the shovel! Snow shovelers, you know what I'm talking about! Even given this fairly modest amount, it has completely transformed the look of things. And being the wet stuff, it didn't blow all over the place, which I am glad of. Everything is evenly coated. +oM |
| Gusts ended up closer to 50mph. This is just from the first round! Plants can finally go to rest, good moisture content on the bottom seeping in. |
| GREAT pic whaas. Arktrees |

| Just saw that our official total was 10.5 inches. It was the type of snow which being high in moisture content, settled rapidly after falling. All in all, no biggie in my book but a nice occurrence all the same. At least we've got the ground well covered. And yes, white Christmas is a given. No chance this'll all melt off between now and then. Believe it or not, that's one of the things I like about living where winters are (Usually) cold-the snow that does fall has a very good chance of sticking around. While last year was that weird non-winter, the two yrs. previous, we had consistent snow cover from Dec. until April or so. That's a good thing in my world view. +oM |

| 2 inches here; They're talking possibly more on Monday (though mixed with rain) - And then, a fairly sizable snow Wednesday, after Christmas. I don't mind - Looks like we might actually get a real winter this year! After last year, I certainly hope so. We got 3/4" rain on Thursday before it changed to snow. Came with 40 mph winds, so the fields are scoured bare, while the hedgerows have 3 feet of snow in them. |

| We got 10 inches. I already miss last winter where it was warm and dry. Bah Humbug! |
| But your trees like it... |

| Trees do not like warm, dry winters like we had last year. I love winter - the colder and snowier, the better. What I don't like is when it hangs around 30 and we get ice storms. Here's hoping we don't thaw out 'til March!!! |
| Still can't swear to anything here, but heavy snow is still in the forecast for tomorrow Christmas Day. IF the forecast verifies, it will be the heaviest snowfall on record for the day of Christmas. But as stated earlier, don't believe it until it's on the ground in this part of the world. Arktrees |

| We're getting a new snow storm on Wednesday, and the rest of the week is full of snow flurries, and extremely cold temperatures. Yes, I know snow is the best thing for trees in the winter, to protect the roots underground and I am happy they are getting it. It's just I was spoiled last winter with it warm and dry, and I miss the mildness of it. The snow sure is pretty though and it's perfect for the holidays. I hope everyone has a happy Holiday and a great New Year. |
| Some light snow/mix tonight, then sunny, mild X-mas, then the next nor'easter, with gales and maybe flooding, then colder...next year. Happy New Year! |
| Our Weather underground local report says we're going to get a bit of snow (< 1 inch) mixed with ice pellets tonight and tomorrow. So it will probably be kinda white...not sure how much. |
| Last forcast I saw for Denver was 1-3 inches starting this evening and through mid-day tomorrow. They said we've had it snow on Christmas Day 14 times in the last 112 years. We could really use a couple of feet but will take what we can get. Happy Holidays all! Barb |
| Raining (yet again). Serious floods in many areas. Resin |
| Lucky break on the snow near Trenton NJ... looks like a coating to an inch in the next few hours. Should start momentarily. |

| We just got 2 inches of snow, (S Central Penn.) less than 1/2 inch was predicted, and then it was supposed to turn to rain, but it's been all snow. A wet snow, and the temps are hovering about freezing so it is neither melting or turning to ice. So jolly old England is still soggy? Has it never dried this year? |
| Not looking so good for me now. Storm may be taking a much more southern track. Its really tough on forecasters here. Small changers make hugh differences. On top of that, as of my writing this, the storm doesn't exist yet, but will be pretty much done with this area in 24 hours. So forecasting these storms in my part of the country is extremely difficult. Happy Holidays |

| Merry Christmas to all! White Christmas here -- 3.5" of wet snow in west MD yesterday. |

| The local weatherman just said we could get more than a foot of snow tomorrow. He said it's going to be a short storm, Wed thru Thur, but it'll deposit quite a bit of snow. DD is SO happy to get to go out and make snow angels. Merry Christmas! |
| It turns out we are having a "slightly" white Christmas. Would be very happy with a slightly white winter. Just a dusting in the back yard. |
| Alas no White Christmas for me. Storm went south of me and we got a couple of flurries and that was about it. Such is life in this part of the world. Arktrees |

| Ark, it's got to be at least a little strange for snow to miss you to your south! +oM |
| Tom, It happens, but certainly not every year. Couple of years ago two big storms in one week did pretty much the same thing. There are IMHO strong tendencies of my location being in the heaviest corridor, or it's pretty much all north or south. Almost never are we on the transition from heavy to lighter amount. This time, we were forecast to be on the north edge of the heaviest corridor, and I knew from the start based on past experience, that the odds were high that it would be completely south of my location, and it was. The other mostly likely scenario was for the track to shift northward until it was firmly over north Arkansas. And really the second one happens more times than not. Hence, why I said that it can't be counted on here until it is on the ground. BTW, below is a map of snowfall amounts across Arkansas thanks to the NWS in Little Rock. I'm in those two counties in the far NW corner. So how much snow did you get John? Arktrees |

| Green Christmas but soggy. The 24th and today 26th we have ice/snow on the ground. It had melted yesterday except for the lower yard and iceballed today. My car was incased in about 1/8 of an inch of ice today before I hacked at it with a scraper. It is windy and in the 30's today. Not super cold but the wind is what gets you. There weren't many cars out in store parking lots, the roads were slushy and icy on all but the major highways. We have been getting lots of precipitation for about a week so it's out of the question to go check on any plants over the hill, I don't want to goes sloshing away in my swampy yard. Uphill is okay though. I just saw there were Christmas tornados in Alabama, I hope nobody got hurt, it's bad enough it had to happen at all yet alone on Christmas. I just heard so I don't know if there was any loss of life. That really sucks. |
