so do yall think it might be beneficial or medicinal????
Just wondering?
Thanks

Round here they displace the natives pretty badly. Oh well.

There is an eye catching chocolate version.

hi jean .. i dont recognize the name.. so please take this with a humorous grain of salt ...

listen to me ... nothing is medicinal ... nor beneficial [i am thinking you mean to eat it with the herbal reference in the title] .. until you CONFIRM A FULL AND PROPER ID ...

and you do that next season.. by taking picture of the plant.. a leaf.. and a flower if any .. and either bring it here.. the NAME THAT PLANT FORUM ... or to your county extension office ...

FRANKLY ... anyone who tells you this thing is beneficial ... based on your fact scenario.. ought to be held responsible.. should you misuse it ... crimminey ...

PLEASE.. get a proper ID ...

good luck.. and be safe ...

ken

ps: you said: I read it is invasive, but nature has it growing here for a reason......

there is so much wrong with that statement.. that i dont know where to start ... but let me sum it up this way.. when i got my first house.. i wanted to save everything in the garden.. for the history of the house.. 5 years later.. i finally pulled out the last of the nightmares the prior owner left.. in hindsight.. i often wonder why i wasted 4 years on highly invasive plants .. either bird sown .... or planted by prior owners who obviously had no clue what they were doing .. please.. do as i say.. NOT AS I DID ...

and in summation your honor ... nature has it there .. because some idiot planted it there .. or a bird did ... to pollute your native scenery.. not because of some benevolent mother earth.. Gaea ... who is raining blessings down on you .. this is a man made problem [and i will not take full credit for my gender.. it could have been a woman] .. which you now have the opportunity to fix.. by killing it outright.. and mother earth.. will be a better place ... i say DIE!!!!

please .. with your new house.. GET RID OF PROBLEMS ... and then you wont feel so overwhelmed with it all ... a true gardener.. does not worry.. fret .. nor feel sad .. because they have to kill things ... as you say .. its nature way ...

If it is a Mimosa, they are a very fragile tree. Just when the reach the size they are looking good, you will lose half of the tree in a wind storm.

Also in the Raleigh NC are they are being hit by a blight that is killing many.

The tree I consider a Mimosa is a small tree that grows to about 20-30's tall. The ones I have seen have a short (5-6') trunk with several limbs reaching the ultimate height. In the summer they have rose color brush looking flowers.

Plz post a pic. It will make things easier on you (especially if you would like a proper answer!)

Im going to take a guess and assume its this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albizia_julibrissin

IF this is the tree in question (plz make sure its a positive ID first), then yes, it is used in chinese herbal medicine.

PS - "Invasive" plants tend to always needs the right conditions to thrive (disterbed forest (succesion rules)), and disturbed soil or places that recieve lots of rain, yet people keep short lawns which are prime territory for "invasive" plants.

Also, most "invasive" plants are pioneer species, trying to make good healthy soil. The funny thing is cities and states trying to eliminate "invasive" species by removing them actually make conditions worse, because they create the conditions needed for them.

Jean, in your initial post you mention your tree possibly being a coffee bean tree instead of a mimosa. A kentucky coffee tree is a much nicer tree in my opinion than a mimosa. Beautiful on leaf-out, beautiful knobby bark, beautiful yellow fall color. It's leaves are bipinnate like mimosa, but larger. Nice tree.

Hope that blight comes down here!
