How to kill a Callary Pear secretly?

My parents have this stupid invasive callary pear in their yard. They know nothing about plants or invasive species so they installed the tree with their landscaping some 12 years ago. I really want to kill this thing and replace it with a native tree like a eastern redbud or something like that. Can you please give me instructions on how to kill it without them knowing how it died? Thanks

I don't think its up to you to kill it.

Why don't you just talk to them about it and talk up the new tree you plan on putting in there? After all you do know them and do talk to them right?

Honor thy father and thy mother.

How are you going to feel as they anguish (perhaps prolonged) over why their tree is dying? If girdled and they did discover it, would you tell them the truth? Could you tell them the truth? Or would you let them think someone in the neighborhood was out to get them...giving them more anguish. A tangled web, indeed.

A. Give it a couple of years and it'll likely fall apart by itself.

B. Tell them you are getting them a replacement tree for a Christmas present and act as if you think they should be overjoyed.

C. Borrow a car, overnight, from the nearest demolition derby. Use it to crash into the tree late at night. Leave the scene before anyone knows what happened. When they report the incident to you, tell them you'll take care of the replacement.

D. Hire a "psychic" to tell them that the tree is causing their karma to be in such trouble that their dead loved ones have appeared begging the psychic to come tell them to cut down the tree.

I totally agree with whaas and tsuga...this isn't your decision.

If you can't properly convince them with some simple education then you certainly shouldn't sneak and lie behind their backs because YOU hate this tree.

brandon7, you forgot:

E. Bad landscape feng shui dictates removal and replacement.

bboy, Jerry Springer's existence is bad feng shui for the planet!

rhizo_1, right on again.

I agree that it's not ethical, but you can pull away some soil at its base and drill in large holes slanted down hill and pour in glysphosphate in the late summer. Tree will likely be dead by the end of the following season.

True believers cause a lot more harm than good in this world, IMO. The 9-11 terrorists sincerely believed in the justice of their cause.

It will be great if you decide not to do this even though you know you could.

Brandon beat me to it. Give it a little more time and the tree probably commits suicide anyway.

You do not do things like that to your parents, even if you do hate the tree.

Redbud? Yes, they are native. They are also short-lived, disease and insect prone, have messy seed pods that persist and are not attractive to wildlife in general and prone to volunteering seedlings. There are probably better choices, to be honest.

Just tell them you're doing some yard work and have at it. If they're as old as I think they'd welcome someone doing the work if they don't have to. If they know nothing about the trees they probably won't care one way or the other either.

You could offer to do some yardwork, then come in looking worried and tell them their nice pear seems in poor health, not vigourous like it used to be. Would they like you to plant a younger pear next to it so that if it dies in 10 or 12 years, they will have a replacement? Bring a nursery catalogue next time you come, with fruit bearing pears in it. Ask them to sit with you and pick out what kinds of pears they like to eat....could be fun. Their callery will likely shred in a storm in a few years, and if they really like it, a European pear, a fruit bearing pear, is tough and windfirm. You'll need two, for cross pollination. if they like the idea, they'll have have pears to eat soon.

tell them the truth.

- the tree will self destruct anyway, probably damaging something

- it's ugly, it smells, and it's invasive

- you'll remove it for free (if not then leave it be I suppose)

I told my parents at every visit their two flowering pear trees would split, even with my brother trimming them as best he could. They were in a protected area and some of the biggest I've seen. They split. In a dramatic fashion.

The only good thing about all the ones near where I live is driving around after a big t-storm and seeing them exploded.

Problem is. They come back. There are vacant lots here with those and mimosa growing in them like the borg.
