Tell me about the Frontier elm (U. parvifolia x carpinifolia). From what I can tell, it basically looks like an U. parvifolia, but with ordinary bark (not lacebark) and amazing burgundy fall color. It seems a tad small for a real "shade" tree, but suitable, mainly due to it's nice foliage and good fall color, as an accent tree, or for under power lines. Who has one and what can you tell me about this tree?

We've got a bunch out there somewhere as street trees. Must not have made too much of an impression on me though as I can't remember much about them, unlike the" Accolade" and "Triumph" cultivars which I'm liking very much. Could be too though that the "Frontiers" are still to young to express their true natures yet. Elms can be that way. +oM

I'd agree with +oM that Frontier doesn't make much of an impression, except in fall color. The burgundy color is consistent and develops late enough in the fall that it does stand out, but I'm not sure I'd call the color "amazing". It is a good tree for difficult sites, being quite tolerant of poor soil and dry conditions - we have some doing well in a median exposed to the elements (wind, cold, salt) with no irrigation. Definitely doesn't grow as fast as Accolade or Triumph in my area, but will probably get relatively large over time. I wouldn't plant it under wires.

I actually think there are a couple straight parvifolia cultivars that color almost as well as the Frontier is said to. I had one at my old house that always had a nice orange/yellow combo that sometimes had some red on the sunny parts of the tree.
