Loquat hedge possible inland Los Angeles?

Can loquats handle/thrive with afternoon heat in inland Los Angeles?

I am looking to grow a fruit bearing hedge other than citrus (too slow and pest risk looming). I am leaning towards a loquat but this is a full sun area that gets hot as I am in Highland Park, which is inland. I have heard they can't tolerate afternoon heat/direct sun but that was for a post about growing in Arizona.

If not, an alternatives or should I plant a native hedge?

Thanks!

Growing up in L.A., I would see loquats growing EVERYWHERE. I don't see how you would have a problem anywhere in L.A., no matter how far inland or how hot it gets. The desert is probably another story altogether.

Yeah, they are everywhere. I heard they will grow but just not bare much fruit and it will be off poor quality.

if they are everywhere.. that assumes some level of invasiveness ... meaning in this instance simply that they grow and multiply like the weed they are ...... and those that usually fall under that label are not your foo foo varieties choosen for fruit production ...

it does suggest they should easily be grown...

but it is left to you.. to find a superior strain if you goal is fruit ...

and fruit will be increased by proper watering [among other fruit producing needs].. which i presume most free range plants are not properly watered ...

Actually the loquat trees had been planted by people and were part of their gardens. I didn't mean to imply that they were invasive and growing wild everywhere.
