North Texas' Fall Color...

This is seedling grown that I grew since 2008. Selected for nice leaf shape and different summer growth color. Planted it last fall. In my experience, it takes a couple years to show better fall color when fully established.

What made me to keep this tree in 2009...

This is Blaine's Dragon. About 6 ft tall after receiving about a foot tall grafted plant 2 years ago. First year in the ground.

Summer growth

Fire Dragon in the front, JM 'Seriyu' in the middle, regular Shantung maple with yellow fall color that I got from Lowe's in 2007 as a 4-5 ft/3g size which is the only year I ever saw Lowes sold them. Turned out to be a nice tree!

Terrific fall color trees for Texas. We had similar results with drought and fall color. Not the best year for fall, but we certainly had some lookers. Thanks for sharing and stretching fall out a bit longer for us on the tree forum :)

Good-lucking trees Lou. Also nice to see you have wet streets there!

Lou,
Those are some nice trees you got going there. The Yellow Shantung contrasts nicely with the Fire Dragon. It also has some pretty showy bark as well. I have to say I LOVE the new growth on Blain's Dragon. It kinda reminds me of the "Ghost" series of Japanese Maples. Our FD has not shown much in way of color on new growth since it's has done almost all of it's growth in early spring when the sun is not so intense. As for your own seedling, I don't think it looks so bad now, but I agree it should improve with a couple years in the ground. Our Scarlet Oak that we had planted a year ago is the only thing that we have planted that colored normally for autumn #1. Everything else has been Autumn #2+, and mostly #3.

Thanks for sharing your photos. I for one appreciate seeing how various plants perform at our respective locations.

That is a nice mix of colors. I can't wait to see pictures two or three years from now.

Your neighbors have to notice and be envious. Do they say anything?

Not a big fan of maples, but the fall show is great.

Thanks everybody. Glad that y'all enjoyed it. One more picture...

Upclose picture of Blaine's...

Toroando, my next neighbor always liked Shantung maple so I planted one in their backyard last spring. I've caught people checking out my trees occasionally. It's going to be interesting to see how it turns out in 10 years when trees are over 25' with fall colors everywhere!

Just moved from North Texas, and I miss it! Thanks for the pics. I loved it there, wasn't sure I would after living in So Cal and FL. The people are great, and the cultural diversity of the DFW Metroplex is amazing. The gardening was okay, too!
