Cut a sugar maple limb in early spring & it'll drip like crazy, but not spurt.

Was the water supposedly coming directly out of the wood? Or the ground?

RE: cottonwood fountain

straight out of the cut of the 5 foot wide base cut on the trunk ... it was a huge tree

or so they said ...

Ha Ken, thanks for noticing. We're being grandma and granpa this week, and next week, I'll be laying low down in Fort Myers. I do hope to take a tour of an arboretum or two while down in S. FL. But I don't think I'll be at the boards much, if at all.

The juiciest trees I ever saw were big old Am. elms that had DED and which were being cut down. I wouldn't say I witnessed any spurting, gushing, or geysering for that matter, but the top of their stumps would just exude sappy juice. Every bee and fly in the area would notice too.

So yeah, I don't know!
