Diverting gutters straight to garden instead of rain barrel

On one hand this seems like a no-brainer that you'd want to take advantage of as much water as you could get in your garden, but on the other hand it makes me wonder if you'd run into problems either over-watering or washing away necessary nutrients or minerals.

I could see how this could be beneficial if you get only occasional, light rain during the hottest months, but what about when you're at work and you get a torrential afternoon downpour. Now you're getting what pours onto the garden from the sky, but also from your roof.
