Sprinkler Valve Box Filled w/Water and Stopped Working

Posted by wplayer Utah (My Page) on

Ok, here's the situation. I noticed late in the summer that the sprinkler valve box for the backyard would fill up with water when one of the zones was on (yard being watered). It didn't seem to cause a problem and I wasn't sure how to address it. I never had a problem at all...until today.

Today we had an unusually warm day and was checking the sprinklers. I found that none of the zones controlled by the box in the backyard work. I'm from an area where sprinklers aren't typically used so I'm really unfamiliar with them. I was reading about valves leaking and the danger to solenoids. Any direction you experts can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Don't know how old your system is or if a contractor installed it and it is under warranty, but here is what I would do assuming it is an old system.
1. Dig out the valve box and find the leaking valve.
2. Replace leaking valve.
3. Deepen the the valve box area and place gravel in the bottom of the valve box equal the original level.
4. Replace all the solenoid connections at the valves with waterproof screw-on connectors.
5. Check connections are solid at controller.
6. If the controller is older than 6 years old, replace the controller.

or pay someone to do it. It will be worth the effort or money in the future. JMHO Aloha

Aloha, and thank you for the information. I apologize for not responding earlier...I guess the email feature didn't email me. Having not realized that you had responded, I just made another post with some additional information: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/water/msg010333318538.html

Any further thoughts given the new information?

Any idea what kind of cost I'd be looking at with your suggestions above (if I did it myself)? Yes, it is an older system. I don't know how old.

btw, this is the control box my system uses. I don't know if that is helpful or not in determining age, reliability, or function of the system.
