Height of Anti-siphon valves?

tsunami

I'm going to be adding some new zones in the backyard and I recently read somewhere that anti-siphon valves need to be at least 6 inches above the highest sprinkler heads.

Is there a way around it? My home, has a couple of hills 6' high which have sprinklers at the top, yet the anti-siphon control valves are just 18" above grade. I know of a few homes in the area plumbed the same way.

There is also a pipe 18" above ground atop each hill with a 1" pipe in and out to a brass fixture, which I think is a manual anti-siphon valve. My sprinkler main is 1 and 1/4".
