How to gauge watering...

I am terrible (as most newbies) at knowing how much is to much or to little...how often versus how much? For example I just purchased some new plants and almost daily they droop and my first urge is to water them. But I am afraid that I'll keep them too wet- how do I strike a balance?

I planted Foxglove, Salvia, Lavender of Provence, Summer Snowflake (Leucojum aestivum), White Nancy (Lamium Maculatum), Sweet Broom (Cytisus Spachianus), violets & violas, basil, rosemary, sage, and english thyme. For some examples.

I read about watering a foot deep but how do you know how deep you're watering??

I'd love some input here. Thanks!
