Newbie, please help. Storm caused sprinkler problems?

HI we have recently purchased our first home, it has a sprinkler system i'm not sure what kind, the main control in the garage seems a few years old though, i'm guessing about 10 years old. Anyway everything was working fine until a storm last week, there was a lightning strike somewhere close, anyway in the morning leaving for work i noticed one of the zones is on constantly. Checked the main control, but it says all zones are off, i had to shut off the water to get the zone to turn off. I've read a few forums and i'm assuming its either a diaphragm or the electrical solonoid, but i know nothing about sprinklers so don't even know where/how to look for these and trouble shoot. I found a place in the yard with some electrical valves and some wires capped off, doesn't really look like it was done by anyone professional.

Can anyone please help, don't really have the money to call in a repair man and pay $200.00 as that's the going rate.

Thanks in advance.
