old septic tank as a 'Rain barrel'?

I'm about to decommission my septic tank and use the city sewer system.

The plumber said that he would pump the tank out, remove it, and fill the area with dirt and gravel.

It just occurred to me that this large concrete tank would make a perfect water reservoir.

It would be dirty work getting it thoroughly clean, but it seems such a waste to dispose of the tank completely especially considering it's usefulness is conserving water.

As far as I can tell, sanitation is the primary problem. Otherwise, this thing is perfectly located, takes up no real estate, and has a huge capacity! Of course, I'd need an electric pump as well.

Has anyone heard of this?

It was a nightmare, last summer, watering my huge and totally newly planted garden.. which was mostly new trees. I hated the idea that, here I was, pouring TONS of water onto the ground and at the very same time, my area was in desperate need for water conservation!

It seems that many are talking about these rain barrels, and given last year's drought, I'm all ears!
