Gravel type landscape covering compost

I have some tropical trees and other citrus trees but my backyard granite rock type gravel instead of grass.

right now I have the gravel completely covering the compost/mulch that my trees are planted in, should i rake the gravel back to give the compost better ability to breathe?

I'm just afraid bugs will get in there, as I have a nasty thrip problem so I dont want to make it any worse, but right now it just seems the soil is constantly staying damp due to the gravel on top of it

any help would be great

hi mull,

You might try the Citrus or other tree forum. I don't think you would have a problem as long as no one walks on the gravel in that area and compacts the soil. The ambient air pressure is enough to move air into the soil as long as the soil has an a good amount of voids in it. Tree roots go out pretty far. As far as the canopy reaches. Any compacted areas need periodic aeration no matter what is on it. This is JMHO.
