Check the tomatoe forum. I have spent a good bit of time on that forum. Man, I love tomatoes. This question is bantered about on that forum all the time. People are just starting their plantings in the warmer climates. The world record holder for tomatoes used pvc pipe with holes drilled in it with I believe two or three line along the rows. The key is that tomatoe roots travel far and not necessarily deep and need mulch protect at the surface and no tilling the weeds. If you have sand your wetting pattern is too vertical shaped to use one hose in my opinion. Good luck. JMHO Aloha

Thanks Lehua, I sure got a lot of good opinions over on tomatoes.
I think that I had better stay with the two drips to each plant. Some one mentioned that tomatoes sent their roots out 12 to 18 inches to the side. Wish I knew more about that. Whenever I pull up a plant, the root ball is not very big. Seems less than that, but maybe a lot of little feeder roots that i don't see. My 12 inch space for two drippers would feed a circle about 24 inches across.

Check some university's scientific research on the internet on tomatoe root growth. It was one of the most important pieces of information I gained in understanding what a plant does and what you can to do to enable it to maximize its potential. Soil conditioning and preparation information from Gardenweb, I believe, was the main reason I was able to get a very good crop of tomatoes my first time(of course many other things as well). There are some extremely knowledgeable people on the Tomatoe Forum. Carolyn is one name that comes to mind. Good Luck. My mouth is watering for a garden grown ripe tomatoe. Aloha
