How to wire valves with muti-wire cable

I am installing a sprinkler system with electric valves. The valves are not in a manifold but rather placed near each zone. It would be convenient to run one multi-wire cable in the mainline trench, but I can't figure out a way to pull the wires for each valve from the cable. Is there a way to do this, or should I just run individual wires?

The way it's normaly done is have enough slack in the wire at each valve, then with a sharp knife open the wire casing and seperate out the individual wire for that valve as well as the common wire which runs to all the valves.
