help me figure out what I'm missing here

I'm trying to figure out the sprinklers in the house I just moved in to. I programmed the controller with no issues after finding the manual online. (Esp-tm) it appears to be working... it cycles through the programs exactly as described in the manuals.

The problem, is the sprinklers don't come on when it cycles. I went outside and found the valve was set to "off," so I turned it to "on," and the sprinklers came on but still don't seem to be controlled by the timer (they run continuously regardless of what it says on the timer).

There's got to be something I'm missing... a switch or something to make the timer take over. All the wires seem to be connected properly. I tried the rainbird website with no luck.

The first thing to check is that each of the electric valves is not open manualy. This is fairly easy to check by making sure the solenoid is tight and if it has it, close the external bleed screw. If that doesn't clear up the problem you may need an irrigation specilist to check the valves.

What/where is the electric valve, solenoid, and external bleed screw?

Sorry about taking so long to reply, got busy with work. The electric valves should be in a box in the yard somewhere, The wires attach to the solenoid and the bleed screw will be slightly off center on the valve.
