'Problem' with backflow preventing hose bibb

As you can see in the attached photo (left side), my hose bibb has a backflow preventer (I think). My problem is that when I leave the hose valve on (when using a hose timer for example), I get a very loud noise in my house every time we turn the water off inside (so it's really bad when doing laundry for example). Aside from being annoying which I can live with, does anyone know if it's bad for my pipes?

Separately, if I wanted to change bibbs, can I just purchase something like the one on the right of the photo and install it myself? Or is a plumber required?

Thanks,
