Watering System Mystery

I recently moved into a house and am not sure what to make of the Irrigation System. On the inspection report it listed 6 zones and the timer is mechanical. So I purchased a digital timer and traced the wires back to the valve and found only one. After playing with it for a while I discovered that the only way to water another zone is to turn on the sprinkler and then turn it off for 10 seconds and then turn it back on and it would work on another zone.

Does anyone have any idea what this is called or what my options are for updating the controls?

Sounds like you have a hydro-indexing valve on the system.

If the area being watered changes each time you cycle the controller (on, then off, then on again) then that's the case.

Are you on pump and well, or city water?

I am on City Water. How difficult would it be to switch to a system were I can control each zone independently and/or switch straight to one?
