Yes, I think you would want your garden to be a new zone.

First, does your controller have an empty zone available to put in the new zone? If so, then it should not be hard to add a new zone with water pipe to an existing system.

I'm thinking of adding a zone to my lawn sprinkler system for my vegetable garden. Im going to be running soaker hoses. The original poster mentioned using a pressure regulator. I'm not familiar with the inner workings of sprinkler systems. How do I know what pressure I need to set the pressure regulator to?

The purpose of a pressure regulator is so the high pressure doesn't pop your emitters from the drip line. You don't need to use a pressure regulator when using soaker hose. And yes always separate the different types of plants from each other such as grass, bedding plants, trees, and gardens.
