Stupid question hose end

I am using simple hose end sprinklers to water my yard.

My hose to faucet connection leaks when a hose end valve is in the off position, such as trigger spray.

It doesn't leak when the water is running and the valve is open. Such as when I'm running a sprinkler, watering plants etc.

The reason I ask is because we're on water restrictions and I would like to place a battery operated timer so I can water my lawn at 3 am.

However, in order to use a timer, I will need to leave my faucet on with the hose end valve of the timer closed resulting in a lot of back pressure and leaking.

I know this sounds like a dumb question and I'm sure it's a common problem. Is there anything that can be done about this? Is this a common problem?

Thanks
