champion valve leak

I've just replaced the manual valve control with a new, automatic champion brass control on an unused 3/4 irrigation valve. The control is brass and considerably smaller in diameter than my older controls.

I inspected the valve seat and, while it had a minor bit of corrosion, it looked ok. I've torqued the valve in tight, and still get a slow drip when it is inactivated. All other gasket interfaces were cleaned and replaced with new materials. I've tried the adjustment screws to no avail.

(what DO they do, anyway? The center screw apparently adjusts the flow level, but what about the slotted brass thumbscrew at the outer diameter?)

SUggestions?
