Sprinkler Help

My sprinkler system stopped working. Thinking it was the timer, I replaced it. I got most of the 6 zones to work, but then couldn't get them to shut off. I replaced all six solenoids (it is an old system and I thought it wouldn't hurt). Now nothing works right. The timer does nothing. In order to get the valves to activate I have to unscrew the solenoid, then screw it back on. Then I have to shut down water to the whole system (which includes the house) to get the sprinkler to shut off. 2 of the zones won't shut down at all. I have capped all the risers on one, but just ran out of caps and can't get the other one to shut down. I am at my wits end!!! It has been almost 100 degrees here and my plants need water. Any ideas???
