I don't think it will work. Your runs will be thousands of feet long (you need to space the hose about 12" apart to get uniform coverage (depending on soil type). Soaker hose has a large pressure drop over long runs. The longest I've had is about 150'. After that there isn't enough water to feed the end of the hose. Have you priced soaker hose?

Thanks for your reply (really isn't what I wanted to hear__ha, ha)... have you any suggestions? What types of irrigation systems do farmers use? I have a water well along with a 2500 gal water storage tank. I don't know if the well is an advantage (or disadvantage?). I have not priced soaker hose. I know there must be some 'economical' way for me to water the lawn that I dreamed about when I purchased this property(??)! As for soil type, the top 4" layer is from an area previously used as farm land (soft and dark, very pliable)that has not been used for anything in at least 15 to 20 years. The soil had to be removed from original location when the land was purchased to build a new church. On some farms, I've seen a roving device that is pulled across the land...what is that called?

farms use a variety of irrigation depending on location. one method is called center pivot; covers very large areas and very expensive (it walks). a single stream rotor is what most people use for large areas. they are not that expensive and pipe is cheap (not to mention all the time you will save trenching)

Thanks... I will research the single stream rotor system method and see what I come up with.

FWIW soaker hoses don't really work for lawn applications anyway because they get clogged with grass roots over time. There are some that come with herbicides in the hose to keep the roots out, but they wear off over time, not to mention that the herbicides can pollute groundwater.
Also, rather than looking at how farmers irrigate their fields, you might want to look at how athletic fields are irrigated.
