Hunter Solenoid Replacement

I need to replace a solenoid on my Hunter Irrigation system. I have a short at the control box and the controller reports "zone fault" when I try to turn the zone on. I can turn the zone on manually. I painstakingly found the valve which was buried between some bushes and all i can see is the top of the valve in the box. I brushed away some dirt to expose some of the base of the valve and can verify that manually the zone works. So I want to replace the solenoid but I do not see the other end of the red wires that come off the bad solenoid. My question is can I just splice in a new solenoid using the old solenoid wires? Should I dig until I find the old connections? Can I pull the wires until the connection exposes itself. I think the system was installed 7 yrs ago so by now a lot of settling seems to have occurred. It is difficult to remove the sand from the vavle box.
