In Search of a Simple Sprinkler Timer

I am hoping that someone here can recommend a sprinkler timer for me. We have an underground sprinkler system which we turn on and off manually. We try to set a timer (such as a kitchen timer) to remind us to turn the sprinkler off, but every so often we forget and the sprinkler ends up running for a very long time.

I like the flexibility of turning it on myself, and given the drought in California I want to water only when absolutely necessary. But, I would really like a simple timer which I could attach to the sprinkler which would make it turn off automatically after 10 minutes. Then if I become distracted by my kids or pets I don't have to worry about turning the water off.

If anyone knows of such a devise, I would certainly appreciate hearing about it.

Hi jacob,

Is your system's water off your yard faucet? or directly off you water main with a vacuum breaker/shutoff? Aloha.

I am embarrassed to say I am not sure. I think it is off the faucet- the valve to turn it off and on is located near the faucet, and it was installed long after the house was built (1928).

Hi Jacob,

Do not be embarrassed. You need to install a battery powered(9v) controller that is installed with a vacuum breaker valve assembly. A irrigation supply store can explain this to you. Install it after the house shut off faucet/valve. It cost about 35-45 dollars. It will handle all your needs for a one-valve system. The battery is easy to replace and last a little over a year. There are all the major brands so ask you store which they believe is best. They all are good. The VB assembly is a backflow prevention device that stops back siphoning to the main water supply when pressure is lost in the system. Good luck and aloha.
