drip hose oops

I installed a drip hose and then dug into it with a shovel when I was making a hole for a new plant, splitting it wide open and had to pull it out. So how do you all avoid hitting it? Is yours buried under the soil or just laid on top? Some one told me it had to be buried or the mineral deposits would accumulate and ruin it, but I don't know if that's true. Also, what is the easiest way to install it, and how do you lay it out, in coils, or rows? I had my first one weaving back and forth in a flower bed.
