I am in between gardening spaces as I've sold my home and rented an apartment for a year due to a job change. The waiting list for a community plot is about a year long. In the mean time, I literally just moved into a top floor unit, so part of my deck is uncovered. This gives me access to sun and rain.

I'd like to set up a small container garden on my deck, but I have to bring water in from the kitchen or bathroom in the form of a watering can. Surely there is some way to set up a small water collection system and use that to irrigate a series of containers - mostly window boxes placed on the railing? I'd like to make it self-watering because of my heavy business travel schedule.

This will take creativity, I know, but I don't know where to start. Resources? Suggestions? Experiences?

Everything I have found so far addresses large barrels on large decks that pull off the gutters. Not an option here.
