Say you install an inground sprinkler system.

Say you want to do a single watering of 1" per week, or, more specifically, just enough so that, combined with rainfall, it equals one inch.

Is there a way to automate this process? Can you get a digital rain gauge that is connected via software to an irrigation control panel? So, for example, say that rainfall from Sunday - Saturday is equal to 0.34", could it just water long enough to add 0.66" to that?

Or, more simply, can you bury a moisture sensor at the appropriate depth, and have it kick on only if, on watering day, the moisture level is below XXX?

Not sure. You might check out computer control irrigation in past threads for specific sites you may visit. Why do you need to be so precise since 1" of water per week is just a general rule to get an idea of how much water to apply for lawns. It varies over time particular to you climate, soil type, type of vegetation and age of plants. Spend that kind of money on managing someone who will look after your plants by visual and tactile means(more precise and better quality). That is why you will have a hard time finding a reasonable economic system to do what you envision. It may be out there though. JMHO aloha
