What went wrong with PVC joints?

I'm sure this is just an idiot kind of thing, but I'm concerned. This last weekend (very hot) I started burying pipe for my irrigation system. I wanted PVC mains, so I glued up 10 foot 1.25" PVC sections with standard couplings. (Oatey) Purple stuff both sides of the joint, glued up, joined with a twist (some were VERY tight and needed to be pounded)... let sit for 4 hours. Then pulled the pipe with a vibratory plow, although along a slightly curved route. I went back and pressure tested, and it didn't hold up. I decided to pull the pipe back out of the ground, and it failed at the joints. I decided to bury 1.25" 160PSI poly in its place, but I still want to use PVC in my valve boxes, but now I'm worried about using PVC at all. I know most folks use it. What did I goof up? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
