Realize that your straw is sucking from the bottom is it hard dirt, shale, rock, or what at the end? A lot of factors going on, like what your recovery rate will be, and how many gallons per minute you want.

I'm not an expert, but have installed a couple shallow wells. You're down far enough to try it out. Like kittyl said, there are a lot of factors, but all things being equal you're best not going down any further than you need do. Do some research on developing the well as you can typically increase the GPM yield significantly over what you first achieve after hooking up the pump. Please post your results.

What type of pump should I get? I just tried one of those hand pumps, but could not get it primed. Any ideas?

I did actually auger a "pilot" hole down about 12' using a 2" auger and pipe extensions. I pulled up clay with speckles of sand at the 12' mark. I was thinking I would pull up just sand only, but no chance.
What do you all think?
