I am not sure if I understand you correctly but usually there should be an extra wire or two coming from timer for the future expansion. How many zone do you have and how many wires are spliced in the box? The number should match.

i have 3 zones. the green wire is labled COM, the yellow is marked PUMP and the other colors,red,white and blue go to the zones from the timer.

i dont understand why a pump would be wired into your timer but the rest sounds a little standard. the one labeled COM is common. each shut off valve has 2 wires attached. valve one has 1 wire to red, the second to com. valve 2 has one wire to blue, the second to com, valve 3 has one wire to white, the second to com. red, white, and blue go to different zones on your timer.. sounds like its wired perfectly..

Most people don't have enough zones to use all the wires provided in a cable. For example, I have a 9-wire cable, but only five zones, so some of the wires aren't hooked up.

Hi ya Uncle Skeeter! Yep, if your system is working fine sounds like kudzu has nailed it... just spare wires in the cord (in case you ever expand another zone) Let us know.
