Controller Location

I recently bought a house where there is an old conroller in the waterheater closet. An irrigation installer suggested that a new one with more zones be installed outside, or in the garage.

I was wondering what is usually done? I'm going to be managing it most of the time I imagine, but maybe if I'm vacation the gardner may access it for some reason, although I can't imagine why.

What do you all recommend? Thanks.

If you put it out side make sure it is hard wired, and put the sprinkler wire in conduit. It really is your choice.

Hi yoyo,

In the garage is most common. It is less expensive because it does not have to withstand the weather. It is usually closest to the systems water source. You did not note where the water heater closet was located which might be in the garage as well. You want it out of sight out of mind, it is already wired and should have conduit to the controller and should be able to be upgraded with more wires for additional zones, then the water heater closet is best. If not then the garage is the best. New locations depend where and how your power source will be accessed from. Good luck. Aloha.
