How far down the well should the intake pipe go?

I am finally putting in a pump (centrifugal) to pump water from unused well (4") to water my garden. The well is 35 feet deep with a sand bottom and the water starts at 8 feet. According to the pump's spec at 35 feet I should get 35 GPM (not that I need that much)

How far down the well should I put the the intake pipe to avoid sucking up sand from the bottom?

Why not just stick it 3 foot under the surface and if you pump too much too fast and run outta watter and suck air,,try lowering it a bit deeper.
