The best place would be close to your electrical supply and close to where you need the water to keep infrastructure cost to a minimum.

The next method is to take two thin light metal (not aluminum)rods about 18 inches long. Bend the rods 6" from the end 90 degrees. Hold the two rods loosely in one hand with the 6" sections together. Walk around the property and mark where the rods move and separate themselves. Do this several times and the areas where you get continuous separation of the rods is where where you dig your well. Ask your contractor about this method and listen to what he says. These are called water divining rods and it works. Just don't call me if you don't find water. There are no guarantees in the well drilling business. Local area data on previous well drilling information is your safest bet. Most drilled wells need a permit and that information would be with the permit office. GL ALoha.
