System not working, how to rule out controller

I have a 10 yo Orbit system. Was working fine three weeks ago. I nuked my lawn in prepartion for my lawn renovation so system has been shut off since then.

Go figure, I finished all my aeration, seeding, etc today and now the system won't work.

I can not get any valves to work via the controller (manual mode, using RF controller, or in auto mode).

The only way I can get any of the valves to open is by flipping the lever that's actually on the zone valve themselves. Sprinklers are all fine when I open the zone valves locally. Thus, water supply is not an issue (backflow preventer is new this spring in any event).

The controller has power and the "back-up" batteries are brand new.

How can I determine if the controller is the problem? The display functions like it normally does but the valves are not opening. Any ideas on what to look for next would be greatly appreciated.
