Great tree, but I have to hurt it!

This isn't exactly "irrigation", but it involves digging a trench in the yard near a major tree.

In my front yard is a HUGE Oak... very tall. I'm not sure what kind of Oak (white? red?). I'm new to Tennessee (Knoxville), and not very good at identifying trees here. This tree is really the centerpiece of the yard.

Anyway, I have to have a sewer line run across my property. Unfortunately, this line will run within 6' of the base of this tree. Basically, a 3 or 4' deep trench will need to be dug right by this tree.

I'm not sure if this tree will be able to handle it or not, but I'm preparing myself for the loss of it (and it will be expensive to remove it).

When would be the best time to dig this trench? When the tree is dormant mid-winter? Spring? Now?

Thanks,

Kelt
