Interesting. I just finished replacing my 1 1/4" point. The process was actually quite easy and took around an hour or so. The galvanized pipe couplers are 2 1/16" wide unfortunately. You could try a well supply house and see if they sell a thinner coupler. I'm no expert but one option jumps to mind:

Pull the 2" pipe and very quickly replace it with the galvanized set-up. The hole down to the water level probably will stay open, which eliminates the hardest part of the pipe driving. In my case the hole beyond the water level stayed partially open and I literally was able to push the 16' of pipe and point down by hand most of the way, followed by a few easy feet of driving.
