Threaded riser nipple broken off and slip fitting glued

Hired an irrigation guy to install drip lines off my threaded risers (had the 1/2" threaded rigid gray nipples) and, instead of using threaded PVC fittings, for some reason he broke off the threaded tops of the nipples and glued slip fittings. I realized that the even below the threading that he broke off, the diameter of the nipples are not as big as regular 1/2" pvc pipe so the 1/2" pvc fittings don't fit tightly like they do on PVC.

So, my questions are
1. is this common for irrigation professionals to do and can the glue hold the fitting in place long term - even if not a tight fit?
2. If not, is there anything I can do, such as a fitting that can allow me to restore my threaded risers without digging and starting from scratch? I would like to get a threaded riser back without digging several feet into the ground to redo the riser from the bottom because the pipes are almost 2' below (installed behind retaining wall from pipe run under sidewalk) and one is in a difficult spot to dig around.
