Drip Irrigation Durability

I plan to add a drip irrigation system to my landscape and I am learning that I will probably have plastic tubes running everywhere. I plan to lay the tubes on the ground and mulch over it a couple of inches. It is inevitable that I will walk on the tubing in the process of cleaning the beds or planting new things, so I am wondering how these systems hold up in that manner. I am sure I will place a shovel through one of the tubes from time to time, but I am fine with this; however, a slowly degrading irrigation system from foot-traffic doesnt sound too pleasing. Since my system will be a bit complex, I will not want to replace it any time soon. Any experience with this?
