Check Valve

I just had to replace all of the piping and pump for an old irrigation system that I had in my house. I replaced everything from the well to the indexing valve. Coming out of the ground, I placed a check valve on the suction line into the pump. However, I noticed that the water does not stay at the check valve but rather it goes back down into the ground. My question is, once the pump is primed and water is delivered to the heads, should the water be immediately available, or should the pump have to run for a minute to get the water back up out of the well? Thanks in advance!
