can't get old sprinkler head out, can I place an extension on it?

I have an older sprinkler head that has been surrounded by birch roots and won't budge. There is a chance if I put a wrench on it that I could screw it out but if it broke, I would have no way to block up the open pipe. I was wondering. The top screws off. Is there any way I can screw on some sort of adapter after removing the spring that would either allow me to:

A) put on another sprinker head - this is in a bed and need not be in the ground.

B) put on some sort of extenter that could be opened just to blow out this line with air to avoid freezing.

C) or maybe clamp on a large bore piece of Tygon tubing that could be clamped to another sprinkler head?

I was wondering if anyone else had run into this problem.
