Don't order from this company!

dear friends,
My experience with "Swallowtail Garden Seeds":(Santa Rosa, CA)
[I should have been clued in when they never answered their phone, nor returned a message, when during my ordering process I had a question.]

I ended up placing an order. They are expensive (eg 2.49 a packet, and $3.95 for shipping), but I wanted what they had, so I did.

I placed my order online. Right after I placed it (like one hour) I discovered I had already ordered some of the things from another company, and I decided to cancel my order to this company. I called them, I e-mailed them.

That was Jan 21 - thus far- no response.
So yesterday I send letters to their local Chamber of Commerce, and Better Business Bureau, and the Attorney General of California, copies to the company.
Hopefully that will get their attention.

Makes me mad.

ellen

Ellen, Sorry to hear about your communicatin problems with Swallowtail. But, I have placed and received at least 5 orders with them and my experience was just the opposite. Their shipping and packaging is top notch and they answered all of my emails within a reasonable time. I'll continue to do business with them.

Ellen,

I too have ordered from swallowtail gardens many times and have always been pleased with my purchases and germination of the seeds ordered.

I ordered from them last year and I thought they were wonderful. The seed helpings are generous and well priced.

Good to know you had problems canceling the order. I wonder why the difference.

I understand your frustration.

I've ordered from Swallowtail many times and recommend them highly. Sorry you are having trouble with them.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with them, but many of us might find that the exception and not the rule with their service. There is a rate and review vendors forum, might have been better placed there.

I've had good luck with them, but never had any reason to communicate or cancel, order online and prompt shipment. Sometimes I wish I'd gotten a few more but don't want to pay the postage so soon so wait.

I'm sorry you've had trouble with them. It can happen with any company. Unless it's chronic, I cut people some slack so long as I get it resolved in the end.

Frankly I don't envy anyone running a business by email, think it would bog me down in a hurry. They don't have a toll free # but I saw a # on there somewhere just in case.

I have to join in the positive comments. I have ordered several times from Swallowtail and never had a problem. I've always gotten way more seeds than I could use and had good luck with germination. But, regardless of that, too bad that you had a problem. Maybe they will make it up to you?

If you haven't already done so, contact your credit card company and tell them what's going on. I don't know if they can cancel the transaction, but you should be able to successfully dispute the charge.

I once called Swallowtail because the seed order didn't show up on my credit card. They answered the phone, (or called me right back) and explained that the bulk zinnia seeds would take a couple of weeks to come in, and they don't charge credit cards until then. (I think it said there would be a wait for bulk seeds on the site, too).

This may be a sign of problems starting at Swallowtail, which has been a great place so far. Their shipping is actually lower than most everyone else's. I hope you will post this in GW's vendor rate and review (we have one, right?) and over that the DG site, too.

Five days does seem like a long response time, but letters to their local Chamber of Commerce, and Better Business Bureau, and the Attorney General of California seems a bit of an overreaction to me. Did you even check with the credit card company to see if the charge went through first?

RE: Don't order from this company!

I've ordered from them many times, always with good results.

Last summer I started some seeds I hadn't gotten to over the previous winter. When I opened one package, I discovered that it was labeled correctly, but contained some mystery (to me) seed. I sent an e-mail to them letting them know what happened. I explained that since it had been so long since I received the order I certainly wouldn't blame them for not sending me the right seed. The sent me that seed and 3 others! Furthermore, they were able to identify the seed for me when I sent a picture of it.

Now, I thought that was pretty impressive. At any rate, based on my experience and the experience of other posters here, I'd say that the poor experience is an exception.

I'll have to chime in with my experience with them...positive, nothing but positive. I've been ordering from them for at least 6 years now, some years several times with in the same 12 month period. They have a wonderful selection, great prices, and have always, always been prompt in delivery. Just a couple of months ago I put in a rather large seed order. I received everything within a week except for one pack of seeds with a notice that it was on backorder. After searching the web for that particular seed I realized it probably wouldn't be good for my growing conditions so I emailed and asked if I could change out to something else, I was willing to eat the difference since the latest seed pack was a little cheaper. They did so quickly with no problems and even refunded me the few cents difference. I always tell anyone who is interested in seeds to check out Swallowtail.

I am surprised that they didn't get back to you after a couple of days. I've ordered from them before, too, though not this year. Hope you get it worked out to your satisfaction. With phone calls, you never know, with the time difference, whether there is anyone in or not. I think it is a small company. Many of these online seed companies are family run or have a very small staff. But that doesn't excuse them for not getting back to you within 48 hours.

Sometimes they have problems or emergencies, as I have learned the hard way, getting mad then finding out they had a legitimate problem (give them the benefit of the doubt if an apology or explanation is forthcoming). Sometimes I try to do some extra checking, find out my options (like my charge card) is something does goes wrong, but I try not to lose my temper when I don't know the whole story on the other end, like I have done a few times then regretted it.

If they do have a legitimate excuse or maybe accidentally deleted the email, spam trapper got it, hard saying, whatever, I try to put myself in their place if I were trying to run a small business because of the above, if I get sick or have family emergency, etc., no I don't think so without reliable backup helpers who would know what's what and that is a tall order sometimes.

RE: Don't order from this company!

I'd give them more time. I've just ordered from them for the first time, but I joined in on an order in the fall. The lady who headed the fall one up is a big SwallowTail fan. I missed the note on my own order stating that it was a special order and would take 2-3 weeks for them to mail out to me. I called, left message, called twice the next day and the phone was answered. I wasn't mad at all, and the lady nicely restated the 2-3 week policy which was clearly at the top of the page when I ordered--DUH!!! Their website says that during rush season they can be very late on getting back with people. Seems like they are a very small operation with quality seeds. I wouldn't count on BBB, etc., helping you with a problem that is just a one business day old, and the next time it would be much better if you would give the other party more than one business day before you start writing letters. Those letters probably won't do any good as the problem really isn't a problem yet.

Take a deep breath a give it some time! I do hope, however, that they got the order cancellation you mailed for both of your sakes.

RE: Don't order from this company!

I always check the ratings on Dave's Garden before I order.

I'd like to say also that running a mail-order/internet business is not easy especially if it's just a family run operation. I did it myself for 15 years and would never do it again because of the impossibility of doing it well and pleasing everyone, and still caring for my family. I ended up quitting my business because it was impossible to run it when it got too big, yet also impossible to hire help.

The internet provides a place for people to vent, but it's too easy to trash a company now days. The results of a trashing will forever be there for everyone to read.

We expect everything NOW! But we'd like others to have patience with us. You know the Golden Rule, just live by it.

I've never ordered from Swallow Tail, so I have no personal experience with them, but I do have personal experience with intolerant customers. And believe me I'd never go into business again because of it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Swallowtail Garden Seeds

RE: Don't order from this company!

I've ordered from Swallowtail many times and have never had a problem. I am about as picky as a customer can get and I spent my pre-SAHM years as an analytical chemist.

Last year, I ordered seeds from Swallowtail. In researching my order AFTER placing it, I realized one pack of seeds would not grow in my area - always hoping tropicals will flourish here in about desert-ville - UGH. I called them and the customer service lady was very patient and gladly adjusted my order, fixing MY mistake.

Swallowtail Garden Seeds is one of my favorite seed companies.

RE: Don't order from this company!

By the way did you ever get your order or hear from the company??? jim

RE: Don't order from this company!

I did finally hear from the company on Jan 29, after 8 days of calling and e-mailing, and one hour after faxing them a copy of a letter sent to the Better Business Bureau.

The lady was very apologetic, "this is not the way we do business". She didn't offer any explanation. She told me to keep the seeds which had been mailed.

And guess what? Of the two seed packets I have opened so far, one is sup'd to contain 75 seeds, contains 25, and one is supposed to contain 50, and contains 20.

Very strange.

otoh, I had very good experiences with Park Seeds and Bluestone Perennials.

RE: Don't order from this company!

I have ordered from Swallowtail every year with no problems, twice in the last 4 months no problems. I'm sorry you are having such an issue. I wonder if they are just swamped with orders?
I also ordered from Hardy Perennials and they were very very slow, but I emailed several times, and called and left a message with my order number, and the seeds were to me within two weeks of my call. Keep it up!

 o
RE: Don't order from this company!

I order every year from Hardy Perennials and yes it usually takes a couple weeks to get seeds and I'm only 25 miles from him. The business is a one man operation on the seed side of the business. His father though helps answer the phone, otherwise my understanding is, is that he's it! I've learned to order early before he's swamped in the height of seed all the seed ordering frenzy!

RE: Don't order from this company!

Sandy, do you have a link to Hardy Perennials? I like to support local companies.
