Checking to OK container type & location

I usually start my flower seeds indoors, but I'd like to give winter sowing a try because I run out of room when all the warm season vegs take up space under my lights. And, heck I'd like to do the experiment too.

I've read the Faqs recommending containers that admit light--lotsa pix of white styrofoam and milk jugs, soda etc. Thing is, I've got tons of black nursery quart/gal pots I could use if acceptable for WS. Is it more a case of headroom and clear at top than letting light in from all sides?

Second, I have a covered patio, east facing. OK to put containers on that or do they need to be under a tree or in the wide open?
