Last week a newbie GW member posted with much excitement that she was trying wintersowing for the first time. Knowing how generous GW members were to us last year, several of us jumped in and offered to send her Free seeds to help her get started. That was before we knew she lived in Canada. I have never sent any correspondence out of the USA and don't know if we would even be allowed to ship seeds out of the country, or what custom laws are so I had to send Irishdreamer23 an email with much regret. Perhaps there is some GW member who lives in Canada that would like to start a Newbie Project, much like Bakemom does for GW members in the USA. I did refer her to the Canadian wintersowing forum as they would be able to advice her what she can sow in Canada and when she should start sowing. I'm feeling like a heel about this and hope that my goof will not discourage Irishdreamer23 from posting regularly on any forum she chooses.

So please please tell me what is all of this about not being able to send things to canada?? |

Good news, I did a little digging and found the link below. It seems that you can ship seeds to Canada for exchanges, the regulations are exempt when shipping very small amounts of seeds. You also need to make sure the seed is not considered noxious to the region (same within the US actually). Maybe this link will be helpful.
Here is a link that might be useful: Shipping seeds to Canada

As dirtbert said, it's okay to mail seeds to Canada. I just returned from the post office. I sent an envelope of seeds to Illinois. It cost $1.56. I asked the post mistress how much it would cost to send that same envelope to Canada. She pulled out a chart, found the information, and said, "$1.55." She said the regulations don't apply to individuals making small, private seed exchanges. I don't know what is considered small, but the envelope I sent contained 26 packs of seeds. Hope this helps,

I have sent seeds to canada and received seeds back from canada. The postage is slightly more. It just takes longer for seeds to arrive. For me it was 2 to 2 1/2 weeks. hmacdona does a pepper and tomato exchange every year, and she lives in canada. Linda

Go ahead and re-contact the GW Newbiee in Canada and send seeds if you still can. Sending seeds to Canada is simple. The only thing different is that the postal worker will have you fill out a very simple form for customs - Name and address to who it is going to, your info and what the envy contains. I just write - Garden Seeds. I also participate each year in Heathers (hmacdona) exchange and yet to have a problem. Postage was maybe about 10 cents more to send 50 packets to Canada than when I send 50 packets to someone in the US.

Thanks for all the information. I think I'll try it too. What's the worst that can happen..I lose seeds? No commercial value..
