Asparagus seed

Has anyone in Z5 (or colder) had luck WS asparagus seed? I think it would be pretty growing in and around other perennials. I know it takes years to get asparagus large enough to pick but I have more than we can eat of that --- just want this in my perennial gardens for a little 'ferny fun'.

RE: Asparagus seed

I winter sowed it in year two and again in year six (This is my eighth year winter sowing). It does grow slowly. I remember I didn't plant it into the ground until the Fall. I'm in Zone 5 (-3 degrees this morning).

RE: Asparagus seed

I have very high germination with asparagus.

RE: Asparagus seed

I had good germination two years ago. (Got the seed in the swap.) It's doing ok in the ground. It was only maybe a foot tall. I don't think I'll be able to eat any this year. Maybe next year. (I have it in the bed with my dill. Maybe the dill is stunting it?)

The foliage is pretty, isn't it.

RE: Asparagus seed

Is the Asparagus Fern that is grown as a house plant the same kind of seed?
