cold-warm-cold germinators

I have some seeds -- native perennials like Actaea pachypoda and Polygonatum biflorum -- that supposedly require a cold period, followed by a warm period, followed by a cold period in order to germinate.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing? I was thinking about wintersowing them in containers, then just leaving them outside through next summer and the following winter.
