| Last year I had a list of when to wintersow different seeds in my zone. I can't find my list and would like to know where to find this information. I'm now doing the perennials but I'm not sure when I can put my annuals out? |

| I did all of this research, typed all of these pretty spread sheets on all of the seeds I was planning on sowing. I even went through and put the months I was planning on sowing them. Then I said "The Hay With It" This theory is based upon if it reseeds then we can winter sow it. Mother nature didn't care if it was annual perennial herb or veggie when she let our beauties reseed NATURALLY. So why in the world do I need this spread sheet to know when I can winter sow it. I threw caution in the wind and have only looked at my spread sheet a few times. If I knew that it reseeded I have sowed it regardless. As a matter of fact I wasn't planning on sowing my herbs till February well blahhhh, I already sowed 90% of them and few were perennials. Just trust the basic guideline and forget about the list. If it reseeds SOW it!!!!! |

| Wintersown.org has a winter sowing database. Not sure if it has exactly what you're looking for... |
Here is a link that might be useful: Winter Sowing Database

| Just for giggles here is a picture of the spread sheet I typed up, lol, this is only a portion of it. If you look close enough you will see another one of my addictions but before you say anything, I only play for free. If any one else out there plays I go under the same name there as I do here!!
Oh I will revert to this spread sheet when time to plant out. |

| What works for some may not work for others. But here is my list and when I do them. Now some of them I have them in two places I am still tring to find the best time to sow them for my area. But you can start the hardy pers. and some annuals earlier since no matter what they will start to germinate once it gets warmer. It is only the tender annuals like zinnia and ie...that you will have to be careful with if there is warm spot before winter is truely done with us and there is another cold snap after they germinate. | Ooh Countrycarolyn, I like your spreadsheet (I'm a Virgo - we love details/organization...lol). What about Scarlet Flax (Linum rubrum)? When can I wintersow this baby? I'm in zone 5a. |

| I am an aries, so I am a stubborn mule, lol!! That is 1 page of it, it will come in handy when I plant out. So I know where to put my tall and long bloomers. I do not know if scarlet flax reseeds in zone 5, I have had some issues trying to grow flax here. I am going to try again this year though. Hopefully someone in zone 5 will come along to answer that. |

| carolyn, that spreadsheet looks amazing-- you should share with those of us who are faithful but afraid paula, what what you germination rate with the daylilies, approximately? i am scrounging all the daylily info i can find, so any insight you have would be appreciated |

| I am happy to email it to you. Though to be honest it isn't like that list is a complete list of plants. That is just a list for the plants I am growing and I have added more plants in my plans that are not on the list. Some like my herb section, I didn't even type up. Ha I didn't even add a pepper section. I will say this though, the list as it stands right now it took me days of research to get it as far as it is. I will happily send it but I seriously doubt it would suit anyone elses needs. I also wouldn't go by this as set in stone. This was me pulling info from the internet that is all. |

| I had very little germination with day lilies Of the frans hall I only had 1 seedling makine it and last year I recieved two different day lilies and I only got like 3 of each to germinate. And I am a heavy handed sower. I think it was like 10 or so seeds in a half galloon milk jug. Not sure on the number of seeds since I did not keep track of that. Now I am just waiting to see if they the 4 babies from last year make it thru the winter. Paula |

| i think i am going to be a wuss and do my daylilies inside, at least the ones i really really covet. so many people have reported weak and bad results that those who report good results aren't quite convincing me. i will put some outside in various ways, and inside in various ways, and see what happens LOL |

| Rose, every single day lilly seed that I started with the paper towel and baggie actually germinated, maybe 1 didn't but I had an extremely high germination rate. Though I collected the seeds myself. Someone was saying that the hard part is getting viable seed. But like I was saying on facebook, it was AFTER the germination that got me. I got 1 to survive and that booger still hasn't bloomed and this year will be 4 years maybe 5. Blah I gave up on it, and I will not be in any rush to try it again!! Though I did read somewhere for daylillies to bloom they need 3 "prongs", is that the word I am looking for. Come on out of wood work day lilly experts. I know your out there lurking, lol!! You know the stems what ever the technical name is for them on a daylilly. Not leaves but actual sections, ugh I hate not knowing these technical words!! LOL |

| rosemctier - according to my sprout chart, I WS daylily seeds on December 27, 2009. They sprouted April 4, 2010 with 95% germination. I know I had viable seeds because I harvested them myself. The year before that I tossed 12 seeds (also harvested by me) in a gallon ziploc bag with damp Perlite and set it in a sunny window. All 12 seeds germinated in 14 days, grew to 8" tall over the next couple of months and went dormant in the fall. I grew them in a south-facing sunny window. One of those bloomed last July. |

| Ask the seeds when they want to be sown. They don't care. The only thing I watch for are annuals that will germinate at the slightest indication of spring and warmer themps AND THEN will easily die if there's a late cold snap. I'm thinking of basil, marigolds, zinnias and morning glories. There are a few others. |
RE: When to wintersow WHAT

| So if I understand this thread right, I could actually sow all my seeds now and they will germinate when they are good and ready to? |
RE: When to wintersow WHAT
| | |
| As long as they reseed in your zone naturally!! |

RE: When to wintersow WHAT

| Paula & Bakemom, you both mention the danger of zinnias germinating too soon & then a cold snap arriving. If you had zinnia sprouts would you cover the jugs at night during a cold snap? For 32* or only for a lower temp such as 27*? Would this solve the problem or is there another risk? Thanks! |
RE: When to wintersow WHAT
| | |
| Yes, covering for a frosty night helps a lot. I wait for tender things like bakemom mentioned- zinnias, marigolds, etc. Depending on weather trends at the time, usually around late March, maybe early April if I'm lazy. Once the weather warms, those things sprout fast. Karen |
RE: When to wintersow WHAT

| Thanks so much, Karen. I "leafed" through your photobucket from the ws coleus thread. What beautiful coleus, flowers & tomato plants! I appreciate your help. |
RE: When to wintersow WHAT
| | |
| Karen already answered about the tender annuals. I guess the worry for those tender things is when they are too big for the jug and you have to take off the top half of the jug to give them room and if there was a sudden cold snap as is sometimes known to happen and well they might be ok and they might not be. But I also learned that you can also direct sow/plant both zinnia and cosmos in the area that you want them in. I have done this the last two years and it gets rid of quite a few jugs (for me at least) to plant since I always do a few different kinds or colors anyways. So these I direct sow in April at least in my area. Paula |

| I just wanted to say THANK YOU to Carolyn and Paula for their info! I duplicated the spreadsheet Carolyn had made, but have made a few changes, and I'm sure I'll change it again soon. And then I added the WS-times that Paula came with. I'm still missing a few plants, but I'm sure I'll be able to find that information on here. Thank you again! :o) |
